I see many people around town and across the country running their expensive "high capacity" diff covers - and it makes sense! More fluid equals more cooling capacity; right? Well... that may not be true for differentials.
Check out the video. Leave comments below. I'm excited to see the results... cause now we'll finally know if that bling bling with worth anything
Just like most gear boxes oil capacity is one thing but oil depth is critical. Comercial gear boxes run huge sumps but shallow depth. It keeps the gears lubricated but the shallow depth eliminates fluid friction heat build up. Most of these aftermarket covers actually have a higher fill plug than stock so that increases depth which adds heat and puts way to much oil against the axle lip seals that they were not designed for. No different than a overfilled engine oil pan, causes foaming, heat, lack of lubrication and parasitic drag.
EDIT: Looks like an excellent precursor video to the final results.
Really enjoying seeing the logic and thought process these guys use when looking at something as seemingly simple as a diff cover.
Got a strange feeling that the GM vs Mopar axles might create quite the stir!!!!! Patiently waiting mid-september
I'm glad you posted the original! Wasn't aware of the channel until then. I've never desired an aftermarket cover but very interesting topic in any case.
Thanks for posting this. I’m sure there are aftermarket diff manufacturers biting their nails right now. What was once a truck badge of honor could quickly turn into the equivalent of a tramp stamp tattoo if we see detrimental outcomes of going beyond stock. Cant wait for part 3!

I have a wrench head buddy that sent me the link - after seeing the video I couldn't get it to the forum fast enough LOL.

Hahaha! This has got to be the best summary of Vid 1 and 2 to date. Bravo!
I have a sneaking suspicion that you're correct - many diesel and lifted truck owners out there are going to have a lovely new ash tray once this is all said and done. Stock FTW? Methinks so!
