I'm considering the electric jack option, but i rented a toy hauler and i couldn't open the
tailgate without hitting the jack! Are you guys having the same problem?
Is there a solution? A slim jack or could it be turned around?
I just relocated the jack mounting point about 8" rearward by welding a plate on both the top and bottom of the tongue. I would have had to do it if I kept the manual jack anyway so I upgraded to an electric jack at the same time. Great investment for an aging and lazy guy.
Yes, my jack interferes with my F-350's tailgate. I think the manual jack would have also. I don't have the option of moving the tongue jack as it's too close to my propane tanks already. If it really bothers you maybe you can find a coupler than is longer. But that will increase your tongue weight and may affect your WDH.
I have the Husky HB4500 electric tongue jack based on a number of recommendations here on the forum.. My first Husky one was on it's way out within the warranty period and Amazon replaced it. The second one is doing fine. I was using the tongue jack to raise the trailer tongue while it was attached to the truck to make it easier to connect my WDH. I stopped doing that and just learned to use more muscle on the WDH. My tongue weight varies between 940 lbs and 1400 lbs, well within the jack's rating. But add the weight of the truck (plus gear) and I think I might have been pushing things close to the limit.
I am soooo glad I have the electric jack. It's much less work using it rather than cranking and cranking and cranking the manual tongue jack. I'm not going back. I threw the manual jack in the trash months ago.
Mine won't open when hooked up with a standard ball mount, but with my WDH it will clear by about an inch. I really only use the standard ball mount if I'm just moving it around. If I'm towing it somewhere, the WDH goes on so it's not an issue.
I use the Blue Ox WDH on my F350 Dually and have no issues putting the tailgate down while hooked up. It clears the top of the hitch and also the electric jack.
I think it comes down to the length of your shank (on the WDH). The shank on my Andersen is too short to allow the tailgate to drop without hitting the tongue jack. I don't think i would want a longer shank which would increase the leverage on the receiver hitch and possibly amplify sway and bounce. Maybe not by much, but minimizing those negatives is more important to me than lowering my tailgate.
