Jack fail

Just a couple days ago I brought the trailer home from getting work done, backed it in, put the hitch jack down, raised it up about a inch or so over the ball and before I made it up to the truck the camper dropped back onto the ball. The jack is shot and something inside of it broke. It's perfectly straight and has never been drug on the ground and I never lifted the back of the truck with it. Gears on top are fine, it's the nut or whatever is welded to the top of the lower tube. Only 4 years old and used 2 times a year and has been lubed. Has a 600 apr. tounge weight, jacks rated for 1000 I think. Anyway sorry for the long story, was really glad I hadn't pulled out yet. Don't want to think about how bad this could have turned out. Think I'm going to carry a small jack stand with me now.

Tongue jacks are really cheap and I never buy the 1,000 pounders. The cheapest ones are about $25.00 and for about another $10.00 you can get a 2,000. I normally jump to 3,500 on my own stuff.

I know, I know, you are way under the rating with your tongue weight, but have you ever tried to use any low dollar jack at it's actual rating? Jack ratings to me are kind of a joke. I always go way heavier. I carry a 12,000 bottle jack on my truck and that works really well for loads not half its rating. Go figure!

Sounds like you need to replace it now.

I didn't know they were available for the higher than 2000 lbs. Sounds like a good idea. They one that failed is what Forest city installed on the trailer. I did buy replacement at RV dealer to get it mobile again so I have some time to look around.

Get a 5,000lb bulldog jack if you can. Those are indestructible. I've got one on my flatbed equipment trailer and it's been dropped slammed and cranked too many times to count....
