1979 F250 Engine

I have a 1979 F250 with a 351 M. Engine burns a ton of oil, runs good at idle but dies out often on the road under a load. I plan to swpa out the motor. Does anyone know if a 1986 -88 351 will bolt in the truck and bolt to the existing manual transmission?
Thanks.

I'm a bit confused by the year range you are asking about as there was a body style change in 87 (and I think that is where most fuel injected engines started too). However to answer your question directly, the 351M was only available through 1982 in trucks only (1979 for cars). So in the years you are asking about, a 351 will be a Windsor engine. The 351W is an different block entirely than the 351M and thus different transmission bellhousing pattern and engine mounts. If you have a 2WD, you could use the 302 engine perches and swap transmissions to a small block or straight 6 transmission, but the engine by itself is not a bolt-in deal.

Sorry for the confusion. The 1988 351 is a rebuilt long block by Extreme Performance I would like to install this long block in my 1979 F250 with a manual transmission?

The '88 351 is likely a Windsor... yours is a 351M.. cousin of the 400 and 460.

.. different bolt pattern.

Burns a ton of oil sounds like a basic engine issue.

Idles well but dies out at speed sounds like (probably) a fuel system issue.

Suggest you figure out the "dies out at speed" issue first so whatever engine you put in is happy later on. Gunked up tank and pickup or old leaky or collapsing rubber lines are often the fuel system issue. Lots of posts on this including mine.

As mentioned the transmission mount for 351m/400/460 are the same and different from later 351's. You would need a different transmission adapter (aka bellhousing) for the later 351 and probably a bunch of other bits to make it work.
