The starter went on my spare/parts truck. I was just going to go to the wreckers and find one there. My truck is a 78 F-250 4x4 standard with a 351. How specific is the starter? Will one from a 2wd fit? From a auto? Just 77 to 79 or can I look for one off a newer truck?
351 what?
because Ford has 3 different 351s
351 Windsor (small block) biggest of the small blocks
351 M "Modified" (Big block) basically a down stroked 400
351 Cleveland (Big block)
Sorry bud, the 351C isnt technically a big block, they have the same bore spacing as a Windsor, and even the same bolt pattern. The 289/302/351W/C have the same bolt pattern, whereas the 351m/400/429/460 has the same bolt pattern. The 351 modified/400 has a taller deck height than the 351C, which is what their based off of, so I'd think that thats were the modified came from, but I'm not sure.
Back to the OP's question, I think that ford had 2 main different starters, and I could be wrong, the two bolt and the three bolt.
