Hey guys
my 87 e350 is in trouble with its rear axle and I was wondering what would be a good donor vehicle to upgrade from the Dana 60 to a Dana 70
this is the second time in the years I've owned it that I've destroyed a ring and pinion set, so I'm thinking the upgrade should help
I already have $500 invested in a locking differential, which I'd like to keep, and only fits there Dana axles.
would an f series truck have the "perfect" axle to drop in?
No,an F series wont do it.There have been many posts as to the incompatibility of F and E series axles. mostly spring perch widths and axle widths. If you are destroying D60 series axles, something more is going on.The big issue for interghanging 60 series axles is the spline count of the axles. ford used 32 spline in most of their dana60s.up till 99 or 2000. No one except ARB make s a 32 splin LSD any more.. And they are expensive. You also have a drum brake axle. More issues.Explore some of the 4x4 sites. There is a weatth of information on 60 and 70 series interchange issues.I am currently going through somewhat of the same dilenma, trying to replace a 2002 semi float with a full float LSD. The spline counts are the problem. and the availability of used axles.Hope this helps.
