90 250 rear axle
I'm currently running a dana 60 so how would it compair? Thanks!
The full-floating version of the axle (which is a sterling 10.25" axle, BTW) is much stronger than a Dana 60 and it on par with a Dana 70. If you're looking for an upgrade to your Dana 60, I would hold out for a full-floater.
parts availability, reasonable prices, and selection of GEAR RATIOS, and l.s.
units.
The big problem w/ semi-floaters is when you break an axle, (not IF, in 4X4
applications), all to often they leave you in a precarious position on the road,
with the axle and/or wheel/tire passing you by down a hill, or worse, you
trying to stop on 3 wheels and severed brake lines, a.k.a. NO BRAKES!!
Trust me..........
The big problem w/ the h.d. Sterling is expensive parts and little gear selection, ( 3.55 and 4.10 are the only two readily available). I was
going to go w/ this axle until I found it would cost me 250% more to
rebuild and change gear ratios in the Sterling vs. my existing Dana 60.
I also don't agree with you on what gear ratios are available. Randy's Ring & Pinion lists the following gears available for the 10.25" axle:
3.08, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13 and 5.38.
And that's just ONE site. I'm sure if you looked, you could find more.
The 10.25 has plenty of aftermarket support. Name a popular LS or locker that you can't get for it.
