Cold Blooded Beast

Just a quick question as I am still very new at learning about my 6.0, in the morning when I first fire up the truck it runs very rough. I think it could be a stiction problem, still diagnosing, but the other issue is the transmission doesn't seem to want to shift. I can kind of force it by bringing the truck up to 3000 rpm and let off the throttle. All this seemed to start after I change the oil for the first time. But then I realized I fueled at a not so busy diesel station the night before my issues started. I have since burned through about 1/2 tank and filled it with fresh fuel. It seems to run a little better, but still doesn't want to go until the oil and tranny warm up to over 100 or degrees. Any thoughts? Thanks.

anything under 85deg is cold, need to bring it up to temp for tranny fluid too , no need to mash the pedal cold , I’d double check a few things , Rough cold stars point to a couple things 1 would be FICM don’t want to see 45v , my ficm is always seeing 47.5/48v, if yours is in the lower volts then you better start looking at your Charging System , need to know what your Alternator is putting out anything at 13.3 is bust , you need 13.8/14 at best , cold start it will be low because your gloplugs are still on , next is both Battery’s how old are they and are they bought in pairs , not mixed matched.,
when warmed up how does it run ? Then parked for say 4 hours then restarted ?

What part of Cali are you , mountain or valley , most on here run a 5-40 Synthetic , and here in the Central Valley my gloplugs don’t even come on , takes a Three second crank and whammy she’s a running smooth , are you letting the gloplugs light shut off before firing .

I do have to say the Archoil is good stuff , but it’s not going to fix a charging system .

Thanks for the replies. First, as for the voltage, the FICM runs between 48 and 48.5, I have seen 47v once during starting, once everything is running, I have mid to high 13's voltage. The batteries are 19 months old and they were load tested today and passed. When warm run great, and if it sits for a few hours it fires up and runs fine.

I live in Ventura County so it definitely does get cold. When I changed the I used 15w-40, so for sure the next change will be 5w-40.

My bottle of Archoil just showed up today on the mail so I am going to add it to motor tomorrow.

Ok , just remember check ficm volts cold Koeo , key on Engine off , as the Ficm heats up you’ll see better readings , look at the other side of the board to VP- vehicle power and LP- logic power , here’s some reading to go by
LP - Koeo 12.0 low idle- 13.5
Vp - Koeo 12.0 low idle- 14.0

Your transmission is shifting odd because of the engine issue. Fix the engine and the transmission will follow.

I'm in agreement with above, my truck acted similarly when cold, after it was warm the trans shifts perfectly. I added Archoil and after @ 1000 miles I began to notice a difference in how the engine acted cold, now it shifts normally cold or warm. It is not the trans in my opinion, my money is on stiction issues....I was really skeptical of the Archoil cause you know, snake oil....it actually worked in my case

Not sure what is considered cold in Ventura County.
Here in Sioux County it can dip below -25 or lower during the winter months. If you have one glow plug not working you will know it.
That said a properly running 6.0 will fire at those temps or lower with the right fuel and a good charging system.

Archoil is good stuff. I use it often.

Well try not to laugh, but when it drops below 60 it is time to break out the jacket. The one redeeming quality to Southern California..

I just added the Archoil this morning, so time to wait and see.

I usually wait 5 secs after the light goes out before firing up, found it starts much quicker and smoother. Used to put in Rev-X too but it's a pain to get over here. If the wife says the engine runs quieter after you put it in you know there's a huge difference ??

That makes perfect sense, the GP's will run another minute, at least, depending on temps.
Just because the light goes dim does not mean the GP's are off.

Mistake a lot of guys make is cycling them twice. Not good for the tips.

Just a little update. I put Archoil in yesterday and drove around running errands, and when I left for work this morning, the truck was much quieter and smooth upon start up. Let it run for a minute or 2 and it drove much better. The other thing about this truck is it is my 1st diesel, I have to remember that I can't just fire it up and take off like my old gas truck. Things to learn.
