A friend has a 94 E350 motor home with a 460 that shuts off when it heats up,the engine is not overheating but something is getting hot and shutting it off. Could it be the ignition module.
There are 3 electronic things it could be, from what I have read. The most likely culprit is the PIP inside the distributor. Could also be the ICM, could also be the EEC.
I have a 98 rv on the e350 has the v10 does not shut off but will not pull and miss bad i have replace everything but ecm ilooked at it and is not burnt or smell burt ..has no codes im thinking im goning to have to go to a ford dealer
Thats what mine was doing, would stall and then start back up after cooling down like clockwork.
I replaced the ICM and that issue went away. I dont have a 460 but if your friends ICM is mounted on the distributor it may be overheating. On mine it is located on the drivers side fender behind the battery.
Here is a link. Maybe this will help in diagnosing your situation. https://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford...module-tests-1
Freeze spray can help you run down which component is giving you a hard time. Get the engine up to temp so that the problem shows up, then pull over, hit ONE of the suspect components with the freeze spray, and drive. See if the problem has gone away. When you freeze a component and the problem clears up, you have found the guilty party and you can replace it.
POSSIBLE FUN VARIATION: More than one component is bad, so you have to freeze combinations to find out which are bad. Might be two out of three, might even be all three.
I installed my ICM on my fender this weekend. Went for a test drive, about 30 minute run with about half of it interstate. No shut-down issues. But, temps were only in the 80s, and engine temp never got over 194 F. Maybe it's fixed...
