What engine? Firing order?
#31
I installed a 910-12351 302 Ford HEI Roller Cam Distributor from Speedway. They were real patient with my questions, the price was good, and they got it to me quickly. I bought the kit with the wires and pigtail.
I measured the gear, and it was in the right place.
I had some problems getting it in. A PO had used a short piece of pipe along with the manifold plug beneath the distributor, which kept the distributor from seating fully. It took me a bit to figure that out, to remove the pipe with very limited clearance, and to replace it with a plug. After that, it slipped right in.
No instructions, and no clear guidance on the 'net for what is the front of the distributor, so I worried about getting the #1 ready to fire, and getting the new wires in proper place. I used the hot wire that went to the coil as my 12-volt switched supply, and eliminated the old plug. I had an unused port on the manifold vacuum fixture for the vacuum advance hose. First try to start, nothing, Twisted the distributor and tried again, and a backfire. Twisted it the other way and it immediately started and idled. Timing is currently set a little off the 10 degrees, because it seemed to idle better - a project for another day.
Test drive today and all is good. Accelerates well at all speeds. Around 50 MPH, when I give it the boot, it comes out of OD, downshifts and accelerates well.
Thanks to all of you for your guidance!
