So twice in the past month my 2003 F250 V10 Super Cab has thrown a CEL that my OBDII reader returns a "N/A" error. I use this reader for all my vehicles and it has never failed to provide a proper code before. I even checked it's functional ability by inducing an error on one of my other vehicles and it is working fine.
So, what would cause a CEL that returns a "N/A" error?

Sometimes it's not a engine code that turns the cel light on. It could be a transmission, pcm, or other error your reader isn't capable of reading. Most cheap readers just read common codes and don't get too deep into the systems. Have you tried FORSCAN?
Which lighter socket? I have 2. I use the regular socket everyday so I doubt that is the problem,
Never heard of Forscan, interesting thought,,, I own both VWAG and BMW vehicles, both of which support laptop software for diags so this might be a viable option. Just gotta make sure to get the right cable. Lots of $20-30 cables on eBay.
OK, so I purchased the necessary cable and installed Forscan, it threw a P0457 EVAP code. I doubt it's the gas cap since it's relatively new, though I DO suspect it to be the fuel pump gasket on the tank. I changed the pump about a year ago and I have suspicions on how tight I got the pump on the tank. I guess it's time to pop the bed again...
Is the Evap canister a wear item? Should it be changed in it's lifetime?
