Anybody here have a '55 F-100 with a 302 ford on a Volare front end? What kind of headers and exhaust are you running? The headers on this one look like a factory option(pretty small) and the exhaust is only 1 1/2" duals. I want something that sounds throatier! Is that a word?
I had that combination in my 49 F-1 but I used stock 65-66 Mustang exhaust manifolds in order to clear that big old steering box. I used Walker turbo mufflers and they sounded good enough for me. IMHO, the mufflers you use will have more of an impact on the sound than the headers or exhaust manifolds anyway...
I have long ceramic coated 2.5" headers with Dynomax Mufflers on my crate 302 now. I am considering going to Thrush or Flowmasters to up my idling sound. I am wanting more of the 60's muscle car sound and not the 5.0 mustang sound.
Check out Classic Chambered Exhaust, they build mufflers based on the sound of the 60"s chambered mufflers like the Corvette used. They can build custom mufflers also to your specs.
I ordered 40" long 1/2 chambered 1/2 glass pack @ 2-1/2 in/out......... they are on the loud side but that's what I wanted. Worth checking out their web site if looking for another option in mufflers for your build.
I'm running a Ford Racing Crate Engine, a 427 Windsor, which uses similar heads to your 302. I have installed a Ford Racing small block header set which, unfortunately, is no longer produced. This one:
It has 2.5 inch diameter exhaust collectors with threaded bungs for O2 sensors for the EFI system. I will install this Magnaflow exhaust system kit made for the 48-50 F1 flathead engine. That kit has 2.5 inch exhaust pipes.
