The OP’s reference truck is an MY2008 F250. The 2008 sales brochure I linked in a post above indicates the 2410 lbs. max payload spec is based on an MT configuration.
IIRC, the MT was discontinued when the 6R140 AT was introduced for MY2011.
Problem with the F350 here in CA is that its about $1,000 more a year in registration costs, so if you aren't going to use the extra payload its a huge waste of money. I'll never need more than my 2,500 lbs payload, and if I do, I'll tow heavy and start contemplating on if this is going to be a normal thing its time to get a 350/450.
Doesn’t the 11,400lbs. “paper downgrade” option (option code 68L) help with the CA registration issue?
This post has the slightest scent of shock and disbelief. This right here is how one soon realizes that the 350 or 450 option would have been a more wise choice and begins the stages of grief. I Loved my 250 to death (more than my 450) but the moment that her eyes lit up looking at the toy haulers I knew at that moment I was screwed.
Shock - "what do you mean I can haul 1900!?!?!?!?
Denial - "its just a de-rated 350 it will be...ok"
Anger - " Its only rated for less because of some stupid paper work or law somewhere and its crap!!!"
Bargaining - Starts looking online for air bags or other ways to mask the problem
Depression - The moment you look online and find the same truck you have but in a 350 SRW for only 750 bucks more MSRP
Acceptance - You realize you going to have to break down and either only tow little trailers or trade your new truck and in the end you make the right choice.
Thats about right. I do not understand why there are so many F250s on the road. I understand in some states there is a registration penalty. But in my state and many others, there isn’t one, or at least it’s very small. Still, there are twenty F250s for every F350 on the road. I don’t get it.

it's pretty simple. most people don't need an F-350. hell most don't need the 250. the 250 is positioned just like a half ton with a lot more beef for the off chance you need it some day. people like that. so, dealerships carry twenty 3/4 ton trucks for every 1 ton on the lot. Guy wants a big, beefy truck that he'll never overload significantly, he just chooses his favorite 250 and is a happy man. case closed
Are you sure about that? I thought the same thing until I compared registration fees to a buddy with an F-350 DRW. If you look at this handout from DMV it appears that GVW from 10,000 to 15,000 is the same price. Am I missing something? DMV Weight Fees
I'm pretty sure, my next door neighbor just got his reg fees last month for his F350 and they were $1,800. Mine were $800. Maybe it's a mistake? I'll admit that's only a single anecdote...
