I have the opportunity to get a 460 out of a 1960's continental I believe for $50. The engine has been out of the car for a few years. What are some things I should check before making the purchase? Or should I get it regardless because it's only $50? I plan on rebuilding before I swap it into my truck.
Not much you can check other than look for big cracks in the block. The tale is told upon teardown. If it's full of water, that probably won't go well. See if it will turn over with a wrench. If it isn't locked up, You probably have a serviceable core to start with.
If it doesnt turn over is it a dud or could I tear it apart and salvage it? I just read the rest of your comment. Basically just make sure there arent any cracks and no water in it\ make sure it turns over?
If it's locked up, it might have serious internal damage. Rust pitting too deep to clean up without an excessive overbore for example. Broken, bent or otherwise damaged internals that have also damaged the block. If you can pull the heads and oil pan you will have a better idea. If it's good, your buddy has a sale. If it's bad, he's still got the same pile of scrap he had before you tried to help him out and take it off his hands. But if it turns over without too much effort and no terrifying noises, it's still a gamble but probably a good one.
Early heads were good I think but did not have hardened valve seats.
That is another thing I was going to research. What are some identifiers I could check to ensure it is a 460?
Check exhaust manifold bolt pattern. The 462 exhaust looks similar to an FE, with the manifold bolts at 12 and 6 o'clock. The 460 exhaust manifold bolts are at 3 and 9 o'clock.
