Well wish me luck boys and girls, The previous owner said it needed glow plugs and I'm starting believe that as it's been dipping into the 30's here a few nights. The truck doesn't want to wake up any more than I do at 5 in the morning lol! So I invested in a set of Motorcrafts plus valve cover gaskets as there was oil in a couple connectors, to light a fire (so to speak). Just hoping I don't encounter any of the horror stories others have getting the old ones out. I was going to torque the rocker pedestals and injector hold downs while I was in there too just for piece of mind. Winter's creeping up too quick!

Good deal. Just remember to do a hot torque on the injectors to get a true torque value.

I'm not familiar with hot torque, but I can assume it's torquing the bolts down while the engine/head is still warm?

Exactly. Torque them cold, start the engine and let it idle up to temp. That is a good time to see how each injector is spurting oil. When it's up to operating temp, shut it down and torque to 130-140 inch pounds....NOT foot pounds, INCH pounds. A 1/4 inch torque wrench usually works well for this. I tap each injector down with a nylon hammer too before torquing when hot.

I've also noticed that going uphill it will not downshift no matter how hard I stomp on it. I've tried the stomp method and then I tried easing it down with no results. I'm not sure if this is a related issue or if there's a sensor I could try... I have a speed sensor I picked up awhile back just haven't got around to throwing it in. Any help would be appreciated!
On my 97 I've noticed the same thing except are your sure it's 2-3 up shift and 3-2 down shift at that speed? If you have 3:55's as it sounds like you do, then usually around 40-42 MPH if I slowed down it would shift from overdrive down to third then speeding up it would shift from third to overdrive. Drove me crazy on a 45 MPH road with slow drivers in front of me. On that truck when I approached a hill I just took it our of overdrive (button on the end of the shift selector) and it would down shift appropriate going up the hill.

No it's definitely 2-3 because after I get to the top of the hill and get to around 55 mph and 2500 rpm or so it shifts to OD

So I finished the glow plugs up yesterday afternoon and I definitely got the result I wanted starting it this morning! It was 32 this morning and it popped right off without a hint of hesitation like I had been getting the last couple weeks! It had the original Beru plugs in it and at 229k miles I think they served their purpose as 5 of them still tested good (all were replaced obviously) My turbo boot started to tear so I made an order from Riffraff for that but that was the only hiccup I hit and that was right off the bat so I was worried how the rest was going to go, haha! Also noticed a pool in the valley again so I'm starting to wonder if that weep hole on the fuel pump is my problem. Anyway another job under my belt!

weep hole can make a mess
mine leaked at the hose between pump and bowl

clean the area good then start hunting with a little inspection mirror

I’ve already replaced all the hoses between the pump and bowl, that makes me think it’s the weep hole. Either that or I need to reo-ring the bowl, which wouldn’t hurt either!

So it's been a little while and i thought I should make time just for an update on things. It's been a roller coaster the past couple months to say the least haha! All winter it has always started, even when I couldn't make it down to the garage to get it plugged in (massive drifts). So for as cold blooded as people say these engines are I'll vouch that a good set of glow plugs makes all the difference. On the other hand the end of January I lost my transmission to a internal seal failing. I kind of jinxed myself in the first post saying if I had to replace the transmission I'd still be fine with it... Lesson learned, I'll bite my tongue next time around. After about 5 seconds of debating on fix or get a new truck i decided on getting a new transmission rather than play Russian roulette at a boneyard. That job was a little more than I could chew with all the hours I put in and I needed it sooner rather than later as we're a magnet for snow these days, so I had my favorite local wrench turner tackle it. 500 miles on the transmission and now i'm having an issue where the torque converter isn't disengaging randomly causing it to bog down and die at stop signs, but it's fine if it's left in first, second, or reverse. If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have none at all!

I’m not for sure on where my mechanic sources his remans, I want to say Jasper but I’ll ask that tomorrow as he was going to contact the builder to get their thoughts on the issue. It has a 3yr/100k warranty, but more than likely I’ll be without a truck for an extended period of time again. My mechanic thought it sounded electrical and not a hard failure though, so I was going to crawl under and around it and just check what wiring and connectors I could see to make sure nothings frayed or loose.

I had a Bronco that did that. Been years, but I seem to remember there was a pretty common issue with the E4OD and the TCC. Can't remember what the fix was, but it was definitely a sensor or something similar.

The problem escalated a little on the way down to the shop Monday. On a level roadway I was doing about 60 with cruise on when it acted like it slipped out of gear and the rpm’s shot up to 3000. I had to finish the remaining 5 miles in 2nd. So i’ll keep you guys posted on what he says as I’m supposed to call him around lunch.
