Talking New, old body

Haven't been on in awhile, just haven't had a Ford truck in awhile so I've just been lurking, haha! But I'm back after I picked this beauty up a month ago. It's a '97 F-250 HD 4x4, with the Powerstroke 4" turbo back exhaust, the cab rattle gives it away, and an e4od that's been "rebuilt", it does have a shift kit in it I hope that's not his definition of rebuilt. It does have 226k on the clock but she's a runner. I got a good deal from a friend of a friend so in the end it was worth it to me even if the transmission went out 5 miles down the roads The body is pretty solid with the only holes being in the box sides above the wheels and where someone had a gooseneck plate at one time . Previous owner has 315/75/16 tires on it which they tried to compensate by putting air bag helpers in the front. They rub on short turns and they're going to be swapped out here shortly. I have a set of 265/75/16's in the garage but I don't know, I might go into shock after having these meats on there. They're just not functional without lift and spacers and it's already too high for the girls, they're 3 and 5 and they absolutly love the whistle going down the road.

Thanks guys! Time to absorb some more good info as I’m sure it needs some tlc. I’ve already got some new riffraff intake boots, rear shackle, fuel filter and an oil change done. I’ve put about 500 miles on it and it’s averaged about 15mpg with mixed driving. It needs an air filter so I’m planning on a 6637 filter to cure that. It’s got a slow drip where the transmission cooler line goes into the transmission so i’ll have to address that in the next week or so too. I’ll keep updating with progress and pictures too so stay tuned!

Thumbs up

Nice ride!

Dumping those huge tires will help performance and economy. Plus kill the rubbing.

So just a little update, After an order into RiffRaff I got new intake boots, and an o-ring to replace the missing one heading into the turbo. With that all off I found one of the rubber fuel hoses to the fuel pump was leaving a puddle in the valley so I ended up replacing them all. The lower one was a bear, after having to cut it out (it was the leaky one) I ended up squeezing it into a V-shape with a needlenose while pushing down to get the new one started on both nipples. Not the Ideal method but it ended up turning out alright. Also picked up the 6637 kit with the Donaldson Blue filter. After it was all said and done it definitely has a snappier throttle response and the sound from under the hood is an added bonus! I apologize in advance for the dirty engine compartment, I haven't had a chance to detail it as of yet...

Looks like a solid find! I think Eric is correct in that you will find the stocker size tires will feel and perform much better. I sure did when I took the stupid balloons off my last OBS and went with new stockers. It was much better for towing and all around road tripping. Looking forward to seeing it cleaned up and what you do with it!

So I have a question, I have limited experience with an E4od, but it seems like it shifts based on speed and not much else in my case. I mostly notice this at 40 mph, this is where religiously it make the 2-3 shift. Alternatively, it makes a 3-2 downshift at this point as well if I let the speed drop. I've also noticed that going uphill it will not downshift no matter how hard I stomp on it. I've tried the stomp method and then I tried easing it down with no results. I'm not sure if this is a related issue or if there's a sensor I could try... I have a speed sensor I picked up awhile back just haven't got around to throwing it in. Any help would be appreciated!

Nice truck. My favorite color.
Just sold my 95, same color.
Still driving my 94, same color. I have the same transmission issue, except it will downshift after stomping it down.

I too am a fan of this color, I have a special place in my heart for the two-tone red/white. But it's what's on the inside that counts (And a blue oval or two on the outside )... I need to rephrase my last post as it's not all inclines that it wont downshift, When at highway speeds it will come down out of od. There's a hill on my way home going out of town so it's a 35 zone that changes to 45 midway up, so when I hit 40 it upshifts and then I climb the rest of the way in 3rd. Granted it does it with ease, if I needed to get around someone in a hurry it probably wouldn't happen. That's where I question if this sensor related or what direction I should be looking.

No idea here. Mine will up shift after turning a long wide corner that is uphill, killing it's power.
Also highway speeds (70) it will downshift to second sometimes. Thats gotta be hard on things below.

Nice same year and model as mine. I have the 5 Speed manual though. The guy before me put 5in stacks on it and I am actively trying to switch to the 4" turbo back with cat delete pipe, however I do want the muffler. Any issue with drone on that exhaust? I have a 4" rough country lift on mine and mine came with 33" tires installed it still rubs on the corners. Got out the dremel and files and trimmed back the aftermarket front bumper, solved that problem. That's a good find. The 97' HD are the most sought and rarest of the OBS's according to wikipedia.

It’s not too much drone for my taste, because you get enough of the turbo to offset it. The rumble when you’re on it is pretty much irreplaceable! There’s not any truck I’ve bought over the years that I haven’t made a change to the exhaust... This is the first. The only change I’m considering is going to a 3 inch down pipe as opposed to beating in the 4 that’s on it.
