I really wish I could help. But to tell you the truth, I'm here because the left side of my instrument panel went dark this morning, '95 F-250.
I took the trim off where I could see the cluster. I could see light in the bottom of the cluster from the bulbs located on either side of the steering column.
I could not see any other place on either side where a bulb would be.
I removed the mounting screws from the instrument cluster so I could better see its ends. That seemed like a real good place to stop, so I put it back.
The owners manual indicates the bulb is a 194, if I was reading it correctly. The row of indicator bulbs underneath the instrument cluster are 194's, so that might be what it was referring to.
I believe 194 is the correct number. You will have to take the instrument cluster out to get to the bulbs. The sockets just twist out and the bulbs just press in/pull straight out of the sockets. The hardest part is getting the cluster out. The bulbs at the bottom that you see when you take the trim out are for I believe the turn signals and four wheel drive indicators.
There are two plugs to the back of the cluster. There is a tab you push to release the wiring harness from the cluster (you'll have to pull and wiggle it, but it'll come out). The bulbs don't have individual wires going to them, they connect to a printed circuit board. If you think of any other questions, ask away, I'm glad to help.

That is a good question. Both of the Ford trucks in my family are stick shifts, so be careful of that gear indicator cable. I don't know how that connects or how that affects guage cluster removal.
