After I placed the post, I searched the archives and read all the details about it being a neon bulb with a ballast. What makes the issue even worse for me, is that I called my local Ford dealership parts department and told them mine didn't work and was told that they had the bulbs in stock and it would cost $1.75. I left work, took my truck by and no one could show me how to change it. I guess they really didn't know what was going on....Anyone found a place for aftermarket ballast for those things?
You probably read my posts about the third brake light problems I had last summer. The Ford dealer was the only place I was able to find the ballast. Unfortunately, I didn't have the luxury of time since I couldn't pass the state safety inspection without the light working. If the light went out, I would consider drilling out the existing light and putting in some LEDs, bypassing the ballast, of course. Shouldn't be too hard and you got nothing to lose.
The third brake light went in my 96. Ford will sell you the parts -- as a set ballast and light. I went to a local wrecking yard and bought a set for $35. When I checked mine it was the light that was bad. You must take off the cover on the hatch and the moulding around the light then you can get to the ballast and the nuts that hold the light. Took me about 2 hours with the testing time.
check the power to the ballest first when I bought my 97 explorer 3 brake light didn't work they though it was a light ($175) put it in and still didn't work..... they finally figured out it was the ballest
$75 dollars they had to pay for it all!!! to remove it is a pain you have to drill the pop rivets out and replace the pop rivets I watched the FORD dealer waste there time and money over a month peroid hey I got to run on dealers plates for a month.
