So I have a 1995 4 door 4wd psd, it's got 389k miles. I've only put about 2000 mi on it and the transmission went south so it sat for about 6-7 months. I recently acquired another transmission and replaced the old one and that's where the trouble began, I installed the trans and went to start the truck and it would crank over fine, but it wouldn't start. I've check the batteries and just sitting they are 12.5v and I've got a jumper box on it while cranking and it seems to be cranking fast enough and it white smokes out the exhaust but it won't ever start up. I'm gonna replace the following, glow plugs, glow plug relay, uvch, and pull injectors to replace o-rings. Is there anything else to check that may cause no start? Idm or pcm? How can I check or test those to see if they are bad? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated
Download the No Start Flowchart from the FAQ sticky and work your way through it. Some of the boxes in the chart are links that will take you to explanations of what to do. Ask more questions as you go. There's also a lot more good information in the FAQ.
Throwing parts at these trucks gets expensive fast and complicates the troubleshooting. Not recommended.
After sitting for a period of time algae can grow in a diesel tank if there is any water in it. If your fuel filter looks black, that might be why.
When the chart says to check the fuel pressure you can use a tire gauge if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge. It trashes the tire gauge but it works.
Whatever you do, don't try starting fluid. Much damage can follow using it on these engines. Try the simple stuff first, replace fuel filter, clean fpr screen, try waiting 20 or 30 seconds longer after the "wait to start" light goes out before engaging starter. White smoke usually means unburnt fuel so glow plugs or relay might be issue. Check the valve cover harness connectors for your injectors and make sure they aren't loose or burnt. Check for fuel leaks around the fuel pump. Drain fuel bowl and get rid of any water if any.
My brother bought a 1995 F350 powerstroke 4dr 4x4 that had sat awhile and the owner could not get it to fire up either.
the old owner replaced injectors and relay and did some other work, but it would only turn over and not start.
So my brother bought it for $5000 and replaced the cam positioning sensor and it started right up.
The ford dealership told him to check that first.
So he now has a 1995 with less then 200,000 miles and it only cost him $5000 and a $35 part.
I tested the gpr today and it's bad, not allowing the current to flow to glow plug side of the relay. I'm gonna get a replacement for it tomorrow and ohm out the glow plugs through the harness to see what they read and see if current is flowing all the way through the circuit. But so far I think I'm off to a good start, the flow chart is genius. I'm may look into swapping the cps, the guy I bought it from got Mickey Mouse ones that he said every few months it'd fail and he'd just keep some extras when it happened. I'd feel more comfortable with one from international or motorcraft. Thanks for all the help guys, I was really frustrated after installing the trans and then the no start just scrambled my brain.
I got the Motorcraft relay. I've read online that NAPA has a good relay and if you ask for it by part number it is much cheaper. I want one for a spare but it hasn't worked out yet.
Status update: I swapped the gpr today and checked it made sure the glow plugs were warming up, after I verified the current I went ahead and cycle the key a couple times had to crank it over just a little longer than usual but it fired up. Now I'm gonna drain the fuel bowl and swap the filter because it says it has water in it. So as soon as I get that done I'll finish filling up with transmission fluid and she what it does, thank for all the help guy I appreciate it
