So i have recently embarked on a 300 build. It's a 1979 engine with the head shaved 40 thousandths, Offenhauser four barrel intake, edelbrock 650 carb, EFI manifolds, Cam Research CR266 camshaft, and it does not have any of the smog stuff left on it. I'm just curious as to about how much horsepower and torque i'm going to get from this build. I'm not expecting much in the line of horsepower, but i'd like to think that i'd have a good bit of torque seeing as the 300 is a pretty torquey motor to begin with. If y'all can recommend anything to get some more out of this build for a reasonable price, then let me know. Thanks in advance!
Estimating HP is a tough one.
But, in general, the stock 300 is a very restricted engine, even with just the intake and exhaust. It was only rated at around 120hp.
With a good carb/intake/exhaust, you can probably safely estimate around 30 - 40 extra horsepower gain.
Add in a performance cam, some head work, bump up the compression, and maybe add another 20 - 30 on top of that.
Some of this is due to just allowing the engine to reach higher RPMs. It can safely spin up to around 4500 to 5000 RPMs, but stock it runs out of breath around 3000.
The rest is due to increasing the engine's torque.
Again, it's hard to say how much since each combination is different.
