I had some issues with hard shifting, replaced the VSS and had the PSOM rebuilt. I also unplugged the SCM and plugged it back in. That fixed the hard shifting. Now, when I put the key in, I get all my lights and everything, but when I turn the key...nothing. I pull the key out, put it back in, pull it out, put it back in...then it'll start. Sometimes I also put it in gear, then go back to park. Any ideas?
It will start, so it's not the battery. I just have to fiddle with it for awhile, by putting the key in, turning the ignition, put it in gear, back to park, pull key out...etc.
It didn't have these problems before I had the PSOM rebuilt.
So if the truck sits for awhile, it’ll start right up. When I say it won’t start, it like the battery is dead, but it’s not, because I’ve got lights and instruments. It just doesn’t turn over. If it runs for awhile, then I turn it off, that’s when it won’t start. It’s like the ignition gets too hot or something? I don’t know. Have a new ignition switch on order.
How old is the battery? A shorted cell can cause hot starting problems like you're describing, but act like a good battery once it cools down. The next time you get the truck started and have run it long enough to where it won't start, check the battery for excessive hydrogen gas venting (rotten egg smell).
When you say "ignition switch" do you mean the key cylinder or the switch on the bottom of the column?
It could also be dirty/bad cables and/or a starter solenoid with an intermittent open.
I think it may be the starter solenoid. I wiggles the connection....fired right up. Guess I’ll be swapping that out too.
Good guess... The best way is when it does not start, pop the hood without jostling a lot. Use a test light carefully without knocking the solenoid around, to the ground and small wire. Then have someone hit the key. If it lights and no start (or solenoid clunk) it is the solenoid. If it does not light, it is the ignition switch or neutral safety switch. Of course it always works when the test tools are in your hand.
If it lights and clunks, check from ground to the lead to the starter. My solenoid would clunk but not start, I thought it was the starter but the solenoid was dying.
Try lifting gently on the steering wheel when you turn the key... I have that issue with mine- Everything comes up normal, but no starter unless I lift the wheel!

That or if it is the neutral safety switch, reach over the column with your left hand and pull up on the selector. (or drop in neutral) as you are turning the key.
