2019 Ford Ranger towing capacity

Hi all, I'm new here! I'm considering a 2019 Ford Ranger. Was curious on what you guys think the maximum towing capacity would be and why?

Ford has not released those numbers yet. Until they do I'm hesitant to try and guess. I curious to find out myself though. Towing, fuel economy specs, and pricing. We're coming up on late summer so I figure those numbers should be released within the next few months.
Welcome to FTE!

I'm super curious as well. Hoping for some good numbers

Anyone else want to speculate on the towing capacity? The numbers aren't out yet, but I can't help but wonder.. seriously considering getting myself one of these once they're out

I would look at Chevy Colorado specs and assume that Ford will work to one-up them a bit for bragging rights.... Looks like their max is 7700 lbs with a diesel, and 7000 lbs with gasoline, where Tacoma is 6400 lbs. I read somewhere that the Ranger's target is gonna be ~7100 lbs to beat the gas Colorado. Here is the Chevy guide: https://www.chevrolet.com/truck-life...d-towing-guide

Thanks a lot! That's gonna be awesome. Can't wait until they release those numbers.. looks like it can only get better from here.

It bothers me that Ford is not giving any specs, horsepower, towing capacity and many more. Seems you'd want the public to know what you intend to sell rather then make guesses.

We may not see numbers until the other manufactures release their 2019 numbers. As they say "the first liar doesn't stand a chance"

Great point, ssl. We already know the towing specs within 100-200 lbs, horsepower will be ~300 plus or minus, and the final specs are likely yet to be settled based on what the competition says their specs are gonna be so Ford can have the "highest gasoline powered towing capacity/horsepower for a midsized pickup".

They are rated 3500 KG towing in Australia, that's 7700 lbs.

But is that with a gas engine or diesel engine? I know your market gets a lot of diesel's while at this point Ford is not offering a diesel option in the Ranger for us. Small diesel's tend to be a tough sell here for a variety of reasons.
Even at 7100 lbs, that's quite respectable for this size of truck! Looking into the future I want enough to be able to tow a small camper. 4000(+-)lbs would be sufficient I think.

3500 kg is with the 2.2 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi engines. We don't get any gasoline engines in Ranger.
One thing that might surprise a few people is the size of the Ranger, they are lot larger than the Ranger of the past.

2013 Ranger 3.2 6 speed manual XL crew cab 4x4 and 1976 F100 351C 4x2

The lightest of the current Rangers (2.2 4x2 single cab/chassis) has a kerb weight of 3650 lbs, and the heaviest (Wildtrak 3.2 4x4 Crew cab) is 4950 lbs.

Thanks for those weights. I was curious. I'm really counting on the Ranger being bigger than the past but not as big as the current F150. I really love my current F150 and it has been my favorite F150 since the 70's but they have grown very big. The bottom end of the aluminum F150 curb weights are 4500lb and go to 5400lb. My older gen F150 is 6200lbs.

This power/weight thing has me most worried about the 2.3L eco boost.

I had a 300 inch six in a 1978 F100 but they also used the 300/4.9 in 12 foot box trucks (I rented one for a house move in 1978 and was surprised when I opened the hood) and it was a standard in giant UPS trucks. The 300 had about 150 hp and 260 lb ft of torque. The 2.3 Ecoboost is around 300 hp and over 300 lb ft of torque...

GM is moving to a 2.7 turbo 4 cylinder in its big trucks (and it shuts off 2 cylinders in cruise mode). Different set of standards than we are accustomed to...

A SuperCrew F-150 2.7 4x4 EcoBoost weighs approx 4,850 lbs and tows 8,000 lbs with 3.73 gears. I would think Ford should set the Ranger at 7,000lb range to not overlap the F-150, but who knows. I would think the comparable Ranger will only weigh a few hundred pounds less, probably around 4,400-4,500 lbs. I have a Supercab 2.7 4x4 and it is rated around 7,800 lbs towing. I tow a 5,400lb camper that weighs about 6,000 lbs all loaded up. The 2.7 tows this much better power and acceleration than my old 5.4 did. However, the older heavy truck was more stable. I think Ford is trying to have it's cake and eat it too, making these things too soft rear sprung for a better ride, yet getting crazy with these towing numbers. I can not imagine towing over 10,000 lbs with a 1/2 ton as I don't thinks it's safe to do. I would be happy with a 6,500 lbs legitimate towing capacity on the Ranger SuperCrew 4x4.
