Oil Change Reminder

Just curious why my oil life reminder just started coming on. I've had the truck 14 months, first changed the oil at 1K and I now have 4,500 miles on the clock. Seems kind of soon for an oil change (3,500 miles) using full synthetic.

Time is a factor as well. Time for a change.

The OLM doesn't know what type oil you are using. All it computes is how the vehicle is being used over time. Short drives where the engine can't fully come up to temperature and infrequent use will shorten the mileage between changes. Did you reset the OLM when you changed the oil?

It's due to the fact this will pop up after 12 months if you have not changed the oil in that time.

did you reset the oil reminder when you last changed it? I have to reset it on my 2011; don’t know if it’s automatically reset on the 2017’s

I didn't reset anything. Not sure how to but will look into it. I might as well change it as it's been a year synthetic or not.

The truck doesn't know when you change the oil, unless you tell it by resetting the oil life monitor. It has certain parameters it goes by (length of time, mileage, type of driving, etc...) to tell you when to change it.
I change my oil by mileage, and pay no attention to the computer.

That's the way I've done it my whole life and will continue. This is the first vehicle I've had that reminds you and it took me by surprise. I figured out how to reset it so in the future I doubt I'll see any more messages. Thanks gents.

Well Cokes are no longer a nickel either. The internal tolerances on these engines are much tighter than in years past so the lubrication and corrosion properties of the oil are more critical than in the past. That being said it also depends on the specific oil one chooses to run as well. To say one pays no attention to the time element of the oil and the consequences of the degradation of the various additive packages over time utilized is just not prudent. Every oil manufacturer that exists addresses this. Just be smart out there....
