ID Engine

1979 F-250 Crewcab 4x4

Whats to observe what engine I have?
Its not a 460 or a 300.

Probably a 351/400

Engine choices for 1979 f-250s where,
6-cyl. 300cid/120hp 1bbl ,
8-cyl. 351cid/156hp 2bbl
8-cyl. 400cid/149hp 2bbl
8-cyl. 460cid/214hp 4bbl

The engine code is in the VIN or on the warranty plate. May or may not be accurate 40 years later under the tender loving care of previous owners. If it's not a 460, it should be 351M or 400. They are identical on the exterior with the only way to tell for sure is to measure the stroke. Either should have 8 bolts on each valve cover.

thats the answer I was looking for thank you.
I wanted to know if there was a visual way to tell apart.

No 460's with 4WD until 1983.

1977/79 F250 4WD: 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code: H = 351M / S = 400.

1977/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco 351M/400 block casting number: D7TE-6015-A2B

-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.
