hi i have a 1979 f-250 8ft stepside. im in the process of restoring it. i got the whole front clip off and im in the process of tearing the engine out. we were trying since i got it two months ago to find out what the engine is. it looks like the engine has been replaced. so i was wondering if anyone knows engine block codes to identify it or anyone knows any other way to identify it.
Originally posted by justin_tractors i checked the engine and it has six bolts on the valve cover. but we checked the fireing order and it says it is a 351m.or a 351w or a 400.
So which firing order is it?
The 302 and 351W both use 15426378 with 6 bolt valve covers. Both are Windsor engines.

The 351M/400 use 13726548 and have 8 bolt covers.
Are you sure about that. I swapped a 302 cam into my 69 351w and had to change the firing order. Later I put a 351w cam in and changed it back.
It is true that the 351w and 302 have 6 hole valve covers. The only way that I know to find out about the block is to look in the lifter valley. The engine size should be cast in raised numbers.
However, since the 302 and 351w intakes won't swap you can use the casting numbers from the intake to determine what it is.
yep sounds like a 302 to me.. 302 Windsor, same thing I have, the firing order is 15426378, easy'st way to find out if the engine was the same size from the factory is to look at the vin and if you have a chilton manual for your truck, it says in the first couple of pages how to Identify what your truck has by the VIN #.
P.S. The 302 in my opinion is the bes all arround motor for our trucks . Mine is a F-100 Shortbox, and I love it to death, but... If you are going to be doing alot of towing you will prob want to ither put a 351 in it or get the tourque up on the 302. And if it is going to be a daily driver... Well then the 302 is your best bet. And mattsbox is right, there are more parts for the 302 then almost any other engine. And the parts are fairly cheaper then 400 or 351 parts... Do you have an automatic tranny or 3 speed?
I don't think the parts are necessarily cheaper but that they actually exist. The 351M/400 is gaining popularity and more parts are available everyday.
The 302 H.O. has the same fireing order as the 351w I do belive. That's why you might have the H.O.,and 351w fireing order.Don't hold me to my word couse it's been a while scice I played with the 302's!But just from the memory's they are awsome engine's.
