I have a 2001 7.3 powerstroke. I have owned it since 150k, has been completely trouble free other than o rings leaking on the back of the fuel filter housing. truck has 205k now. 4 days ago the truck shut off, out of no where, went from running perfect to not at all, leaving my stranded. I thought the fuel pump went out, so i replaced. did that job this morning, drove for half an hour and same problem, died out of no where. i went back about an hour after it died, drove for 5 mins, started losing power to the point where it was all it could do to keep 35 mph. had a weird ticking sound like an exhaust leak on an old chevy, and it was running extremely rough, sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders. I have heard a lot about CPS and IPS, but i am strapped for cash and am not too aure what to do. any help is much appreciated
This could be a number of things. IPR, CPS, Chafed wiring on the 42 pin connector, UCVHs, clogged fuel filter, any number of things.
Limited budget? Don't guess and shotgun. Doing so will run up a big tab very fast.
Others will chime in here for steps to try, I am going to first recommend looking at TorquePro or Forscan to collect data. And an OBD2 dongle. Small dollars that will help focus in on the exact reason for your problem.
First checks though:
Check your engine oil level. If the oil level is low, then the HPOP will quit providing pressure to the injectors and the engine will not run.
When was the fuel filter last changed?
Any water in the fuel bowl?
Search on the "50 cent mod." The UVCH is known to have a problem on certain years and may become disconnected. This will leave you with only half of an engine.
Learn about the 42 pin connector and where the harness crosses the valve cover. See if it might have wear at that point as it will cause lots of issues. This is a prime case where changing parts will run up a big bill and not fix anything.
After that, there are other things to look at, which may start involving wrenches and shortly after, diagnostics will become very important. The 7.3 needs a small number of things to start and looking into the computer will show what is missing or "off."
no water in fuel, just filled up right before the pump shut off at my regular station, lots of big trucks through there so i doubt thats the problem. fuel filter was changed 9,000 miles ago, planned on changing it in the next 1,000 with my oil as i always have. as my truck is on the side of the highway , i will get back after i peek around under the hood. will definitely check for tight connections on sensors and the pcm, and for worn wires on the main harness and everything else. will talk to my mechanic about a code reader, family friend im sure he would help me out. thanks for the quick reply, ill be back with more information
Just realized you posted this in the general Super Duty section.
Consider (nicely) asking a moderator to move your thread to the 7.3 section. Lots of great members there who don't come "up here" very often. You want their input on this problem.
I have used fuel additives, but nothing with an oring around or in the cap. bottle was like a quart of oil, just break the plastic seal and go. and i made a video if it would help. WOT on a small grade, trying to get the truck home. didnt have it wide open long only for the video, but half or 1/8 throttle made no difference. truck was shaking horribly and had 0 power. Video is right here
flat towed the truck home. engine oil is full to the top, no wire harness wear as far as i can tell. can you tell me where i need to check for tight connections in the harness? the pcm is the box under the dash i believe, but i am wondering if there are anymore things that could be loose or wore out under the hood. im looking into the torque pro as of now. Thanks so much for replies, Chris
CPS going will typically result in the truck not starting at all. Since it runs after cooling off a bit, I'd check the time nut on the back of the IPR to make sure it is tight. If so, take the truck on a drive and get it warm. Once it cuts off, pour some ice water on the IPR and see if it starts running again.
These trucks tend to be picky about sensors, they typically only like International or Ford branded parts.
so i went out this morning. the fuel switch under the dash was poped up, so i pushed it down. i was messing with it the other day when it shut off on me, but it was down so i dont think that is my issue. but it cleared up and is now running great, i have it warming up in the driveway hoping it will cut off. will try the ice water on the part you recommended, if it shuts off. if it doesnt after 20 mins or so i will go drive it and see how it goes. i am almost positive the truck running so horribly was the fuel switch, which is fixed now. the random dying on my i haven’t figured it out yet, but there is no oil around the connector on the IPS. After i try to start after i pour ice water on that sensor, if that doesnt work i will check for contamination in my fuel bowl and check fuel pressure from the inline pump on the frame with diesel from the tank, if that number looks low i will check it with a separate fuel cell that i can put diesel in. trying to look for restrictions in the fuel tank my mechanic said thats a possibly. he said to order a CPS asap because it’s inexpensive and very well could be the problem. same person that told me that fuel switch should be pushed down.
Just had the same problem. Truck would shut off with no warning. Did all the checks that you have done. Went to Napa and bought a CPS made by Delphi, Put it in drove 5 blocks from the house, it shut off again. Next day, went to Ford dealer bought Motorcraft CPS and switched it out. No shutoffs in 3 days. As previously stated-stick with Motorcraft parts especially with sensors. Cost me $42 at he dealer. Hope this helps
my truck has the updated CPS and IPS sensors, they could be bad but ive pretty much narrowed it down to my IPR or my injector harnesses under the valve covers. pulling the IPR tomorrow to inspect for cracks, gunna order one regardless and if it doesnt fix, ill send it back, then to the $.50 mod if not done yet. ill keep posted if i figure it out, thanks for all the imput
was out driving, havent been in my truck in about a week. pulled over and had my work cooler with some water bottles in it, figured id give it a try. poured water on the IPR and the truck came right back. took it out and tried to get it to cut off again, which it did, did the same thing and it cranked right back up. ordering a IPR now, thanks for the imput from all of you. will post back if this fixes it once and for all
New IPR, truck runs good as new. Just drove all around town, trying to get it to shut off. spent about an hour driving and nothing, so i am confident that was my problem. hope this thread helped someone. thanks for the imput
