Engine dragging

When I take my foot off the gas it feels like my car would come to a complete stop within a short distance if I let it coast. The brakes and e brake were checked and they are supposedly fine. It seems to be worse at lower speeds. Also it rides rough in the front. I took it to a shop for both issues and the only thing they found was out tie rods on the front. Well over 400$ later both issues are still there and getting worse. Does anyone know what this could be? I have an 08 Ford Escape with 63k miles on it. It’s the smaller engine front wheel drive.

Have you checked the wheel alignment?

Is it manual or auto? If manual does it feel any different if you depress the clutch and coast vs clutch engaged?

they did an alignment when they changed the outer tie rods on the front. It is an automatic.

Did they check the rear alignment too?

Did the dragging come on slowly or fairly quickly?

Since it's an auto have you tried it in neutral to see if it does the same?

Another thing you can do is jack up the front (chock the rear) and put it in neutral. From there you can spin each wheel one at a time to see if they have the same/similar resistance. You can also do this for the rear.

I believe they did a full alignment when the tie rods were replaced. It came on fairly quickly. Seems like after they did that work it got a lot worse within a week.

Hmmm - I'd suspect the alignment is out, that will give scrub on the front and additional drag as you describe, your gas mileage will be down too? An experienced eye would be able to tell if the alignment is grossly out and the tires are scrubbing but it may be worth asking the shop to re-check the alignment as a first step. Does the steering feel any less or more responsive when lane-changing than before? Again if the alignment is out the car will handle differently.

The steering doesn’t feel any different but I did smell a slight burning rubber smell. It’s not all the time and at higher speeds even highway speeds it handles fine. Maybe I should just chalk up the money I spent as a loss and have another shop check it out?

I would have the original shop check it first - they may resolve it for free, if you still have concerns then maybe drop the $$ on a second alignment somewhere else...
