I have a 460/C6 in a '67 F100 2WD. I am guessing the transmission has a shift kit because of the hard firm shifts that I don't need. The fluid is also black so I am a bit hesitant to change it thinking that it may cause the transmissions to start slipping. Can I change something in the valve body to reduce the hard firm shifts? Will changing the old black fluid cause any problems?
If your shifts are a the correct time and remain too harsh after new fluid, filter and modulator check, then the next step would be to fiddle with the valve body and return it to OEM specs if it has been molested.
A transmission failure after a fluid change is often blamed on the fluid change, the theory being that the transmission was somehow held together by the varnish and crud in the fluid and transmission. (I thought that sounded reasonable myself...) But it's just not that way. Black gritty fluid is not your friend and may contribute to hash shifts.
Thanks for the links, my transmissions is not shifting early or late, just hard. I'll start with servicing it with new fluid and a filter and see how that goes.
