I want to know how do you know when your tranny is on the outs. Mine has a little trouble when shifting 2-3. Mostly when its cold. Also when I shift into R anytime, it jumps just a little then it waits about 8-10 seconds then it jerks real hard into R gear. The truck does have a history of towing and it does have 151,000 miles too. Just wondering what I should do or if its something I can correct with the band adjusments.
Taking a while for a C6 to grab reverse can be signs of fluid problems. I would check and make sure your fluid is topped off. How old is the fluid? If unknown sounds like time to change that.
C6 are pretty stout transmissions. AS long as the fluid is keep full, clean, and cool. However 151,000 and towing.... I would start with fluids. I am not 100% but I think the band adjust is more for slippage... ..
Oh on last note and maybe worth a try. Check the modulator out. My C6 was having a hard time shifting. ( reverse was there right away tho. ) and I found the modulator was bad / wrong ? Mine would wait to shift to 3rd until I was doing like 35 - 40 in 2nd and even then I kind of had to take my foot off the gas before it would shift.
Just note that once you pull the modulator out ... the fluid is one step behind it... I was taken by suprize by the stream of red fluid when I pulled mine out. LOL
A fluid change might help, but the seals on the pistons may be hard & letting pressure escape in the clutch drums. The band is for 2nd gear, & reverse & high gear use the same set of clutches.

With that history and mileage, you are probably going to need to go thru the tranny. You MAY possibly buy some time by doing a fluid/filter change and adding some Lucas to it, but thats strictly a bandaid to try and get by for a little while. The band adjustment is for second gear only. Real good chance that the valves in the valve body are getting varnished up and sticking and the clutch plates are probably shot too. Whats happening is it is taking a bit to build enough pressure to engage the clutch packs and get the valves to move in the valve body.
On the bright side, C6's are not that hard to go thru, (altho they are heavier than a b!tch to pull, lol) and a good overhaul kit is not that expensive for them. New clutches, a shift kit in the valve body and a new torque converter and you are ready for another couple hundred thousand miles on it.
Maximum rebuilt cost of a C6 is 500-700$. But a C6 that tows heavy loads everyday, should last alot longer than 150k! Providing good maintenance was met.
Well the linkage is in good shape. I checked the fluid again and its still at the appropriate height but it is brownish red in color. Leaning a little more towards red. Doesnt smell like somethings burning though. So definently a fluid change at least. I thought that the trannys need special tools to get apart and change stuff out on em. I can get a HD rebuild kit for 315.00 but it looks to be a mess if you dont know what you are doin. Anybody do one before? Is it really that bad? And I thought torque converters didnt go bad. I thought they were just a series of fins welded in place so therefore nothing to wear out. There is no lock up on this at all either like an E4OD.
The C6 is pretty simple, get the steps to rebuild one, and if you have a well stocked tool box, go for it, take your time, patience is very important to doing a good job, I like the C6, it is the best auto trans. to teach on cause of how simple they are.

Problem is oil will wear the fins over time. Might not be much but it will wear. Also you change it due to the converter will be full of gunk, sludge, clutch material, shavings, you get this idea.. all of which you do not want to take the chance of pumping in to your fresh rebuilt transmission.
Ok so the fluid and the stuff the fluid is washing around is what wears it down. That does make some sense. Im pretty sure its the same TC that came in it off the line in 1990 so that may do something there.
