This item is underneath the dashboard and just starts making noises like an old fax machine .I have no idea what it is, what it is supposed to do, or what might be wrong with it. I cant replace it because I dont know what it is! If you can help thank you!! Ford F150 1995.
Does yours beep 5 times, pause then beep again? If so, as I stated before I believe that is the audible warning to inform the driver the Air Bag lamp is not functioning or missing.
No it doesnt .Its a fax machine sound. Its irratic sounding without a pattern of pitch or length. Sometimes its quiet and glitcht sounding ..other times it's loud and obnoxious .However, all the same, it always comes on when I start the vehicle and shuts off after 10 minutes or so of driving .it literally sounds like a fax machine without any rythym .
There is no light the shines on tbe dashboard. Its funnt because my father said the same thing. "Only time Ive ever heard of this happening is now, and of course its you that it happens to". Anyways, Ive looked up similiar images to it and it seems as if you guys are right and its time to replace that module. However, I am curious, what exactly does it do?
The Airbag lamp is illuminated for 6 seconds when you cycle the key from Off to Run. If the Air bag module does not sense power on Pin 1 (via Fuse 18) or if the Airbag lamp is open or missing it will turn on the tone generator and emit the string of 5 beeps. Before spending money I would check the fuse and the bulb. If you are really ambitious verify power on Pins 1 and 4 connector C217 on the Airbag module.
Given the symptoms you could have more than one issue.
What does the Airbag module do? It deploys the airbags in an accident.

Hmmm... does your truck have a chime or a buzzer if you leave the keys in the ignition? If you have the buzzer, the module is located DIRECTLY behind the airbag module... and if it's failing it could sound like a fax machine. To test, put your keys in the ignition, open the door, and (if there's no buzzer/chime) reach BEHIND the airbag module and jiggle the module for the buzzer... it'll probably start working.
Just a thought, when I still had the buzzer it would make strange sounds sometimes (or none), I replaced it with the chime out of an XLT at the PAP... much nicer, and it tells me if I left the lights on!
