I am a novice when it comes to PSD, even more so on transmissions. 1996 F250, E40D: recently when slowing down to almost stop, but not quite, to make a right turn, the transmission acted like it went to neutral and would not move the truck forward. I coasted to a pull off, turned off the truck, restarted and it drove fine. it tried to do this again later on another day but quickly “caught” and remained in drive. OD light did not blink, third brake light is functional. I have the ODB Fusion app and no codes were set according to the app, but I don’t know if it reads transmission codes.
I don’t know enough about transmissions to know what questions to ask, but it seems like it might me a sensor or electrical connection issue since it drove fine after a reset.
Any ideas on what to check would be appreciated. I know sometimes you have to wait for something to break to figure out what is wrong. I would like to save a tow bill.
It can't be anything electrical. It can be low trans fluid or a loose or missing internal filter. If it's none of those, it's a bigger problem, probably a worn seal in a clutch.
Changed the transmission fluid and filter using Mark K. Instructions. Was easier than I thought it would be, worked nicely. Fluid was black though.
Time will tell on the transmission.
So today after transmission was warm it seemed like it did not want to shift out of 2nd gear, and when it finally did it was a hard shift. OD light was blinking, until I touched the brake and then the light went out. I pulled over, turned key off and started it back up and continued on with no issues.
Looked for trouble codes with my OBDLink MX but no codes. Maybe I need another setup for reading transmission codes?
Third brake light works, VSS recently changed with OEM.
Can anybody relate to this? What would a next step be to diagnose the issue?
Take a look at this and look around the forum you land in to see if you can find something that helps. It's the Forscan forum. I think you can get the codes you want.
The code will stay in memory for 60 warmup cycles from the last time the fault was detected.
A warmup cycle us when the engine is started below a certain coolant temp (I think it's 120F) and warms above another temp (I think it is 180F, but it's been a long time since I looked up those numbers.)
I purchased ford enhanced add on for my app. The only code reported was P0500 VSS sensor circuit fault. I had replaced the VSS about a month prior with OEM part. Is there another part of that circuit that can fail besides the sensor?
The app also had a statement of “124 confirmed codes” in the reporting section but no others were listed. Not sure what that means.
I did not clear the code, would it help to do that?
