Tailgate dropped while towing 5er

While the auto tailgate drop feature is handy... I can't believe they didn't put some sort of lockout on that feature while driving. Was towing my 5th wheel last weekend and had the key FOB in my pocket. At some point I triggered the tailgate to drop and noticed it after I had backed into my camping space. Now when the tailgate is down... I only have about 6-8in of clearance to the belly door on the 5th wheel. Picture taking a turn with the tailgate down towing the 5th wheel. The only thing that saved me is my hitch is a Demco Autoslider - as you make a turn, it moves the hitch plate back up to 12in creating more clearance between the truck and trailer. Unfortunately I still put the corner of the tailgate through the gel-coat for a nice crack on the belly door - luckily the autoslider kept it to a surface puncture as apposed to a huge hole in the belly door. The other side has a nice dent, but didn't crack the gel-coat. Note to self - don't put key FOB in pocket when towing.

After reading things like this I always make sure no other family members are parked right behind the truck. Sitting down on the fob could lower the tailgate right down on the hood of one of the cars.

This may be a faulty wire in a main harness for the truck, i had it and thought the same thing. Ford fixed it. Search forum and you will find more.

Mine has opened unexpectedly only a couple times. Not sure if I accidentally hit the dashboard button or the fob. The remote tailgate has got to be the most useless "convenience" ever. Found others had rigged tailgate lanyards, made my own, and that has proven as an acceptable band-aid. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...0&postcount=86

Tailgate shouldn’t drop when the doors are locked. If yours is, then you’ve got an issue. I set my doors to auto lock and have never had a problem with the tailgate dropping on its own.
Now I have hit the fob while at home with the truck parked. First time I came out and saw the tailgate down freaked me out a bit. Lol

Ford's FOB's are the worst. The buttons are way too easy to push. We had a Fusion and I was CONSTANTLY setting the alarm off from my office every time I sat down. This FOB issue alone makes me glad we just got an XL. That said, the other day I rolled down my windows at work because somehow I was pushing the unlock button in my pocket long enough for it to roll the windows down. It was about to rain, too.

Ford needs to quit making **** FOB's. I've owned cars made by VW, Porsche, Lexus, Hyundai, BMW, and Chevy and Ford is the ONLY company whose stupid FOD would let the buttons be pushed in my pocket.

So annoying and stupid.

I punched a hole in the front door of my 5er yesterday. I only have about a few inches of clearance and I wasn't straight with the camper and forgot about the corner of the tailgate. Oh well. It didn't hurt the truck, just damaged the door.

I was constantly setting off the alarm with our 15 Lariat F150 due to the fob design. I also disabled the tailgate open button via forscan. I'm glad the F250 doesn't have this feature.

Lots of people have had that issue, and I don't think it is because you hit the fob. It's a problem that Ford needs to fix, like others have said, search for it here and you will see it's not unusual.
One of the main reasons I did not get keyless start was this very issue.

I also installed a lanyard. My first attempt failed due to weak chain so I added a heavier chain and springs.
