Hey guys i need a little guidance. I was returning home from my last job of the day today and was running low on fuel (halfway between E-1/4) so i pulled into a gas station to fill up. As i was waiting on the pump to open up I noticed that my truck was idling rough. I went ahead and filled up and drove home. Bu the time i got home the truck was idling horribly. I ran a scan and got the P0263 code. I drove to town and the truck has zero power and throwing quite a bit of black smoke. When i stop at a light, i press the gas and don’t hear anything at all and the truck will barely even move but eventually will start going after a few seconds but completely gutless. At 50 it runs alright it seems but once i get into lower rpms then it’s a fight for power.
This truck is an early 04, heads done, egr delete, the atlas 40 ficm just put in a couple months back.
It was a very hot day here today and inwas towing about 10k pounds when this happened.
should I just throw in a new injector and see if it fixes my issue? Would one bad injector cause it to not want to start and not have any power to move itself?
How long will an injector replacement take for a first timer? My wife has lots of people coming over for a pool party tomorrow so not sure if i can squeeze it in before the party or not.
Injector 1 is pass front, so an easy one to get to. You should have the brushes to clean the bore. Black smoke is either over fuel or under air. Over fuel though is not a good condition to be running under. Do you have an IDS to check cylider balance?
Thank you! So could an injector be stuck open causing too much fuel and woukd that cause it to have zero power?
I was just looking at injectors and advanced auto is showing two different BWD injectors in stock for my truck with two totally different part numbers. Are there different injectors for early 04’s? I want to make sure i buy the right injector.
Get a Motorcraft reman........anything else and the odds are you will be replacing it soon.
Anyone else here will tell you the same thing, reman Motorcraft.
The big box parts stores and literally the last place you want to buy an injector.
This forum is littered with threads of folks using a no name injector, the end result being not so good.
As Jack mentioned, you will need a bore brush kit to clean the injector cup properly. Alliant makes a good set, but I'm sure there are others out there.
IDS is what dealers use to do a more thorough check of injector health.
My local dealer wants $650 for a teman injector. That’s not happening! What is a reasonable price?
and I don’t have time to order brushes online, I need to be back in business by Monday Morning. Any idea on what size brush I need?
And can ONE INJECTOR cause my issues? It amazes me that from a dead stop that I can mash the pedal to the floor and don’t have ANY response whatsoever feom the engine for like 7-8 seconds and then all lf a sudden it decides it’s time to start puttering away. It litterally takes 25 seconds probably to go from 0-20.
i read that a bad ficm can also cause this code. It just doesn’t seem likely to me that ONE INJECTOR can make a truck run soooooo horrific. Thoughts?

I don't think having one dead injector is the cause of that much of a lack of power, no.
What you describe sounds more like a severe lack of boost, or fuel.
Have you ever had the fuel pressure checked? Has the blue spring update been done to the upper fuel bowl?
I'm wondering if the low fuel not only caused the injector code, but possibly being that low in the tank did contribute to restricted main filter.
Might not hurt to check fuel filters.
Sorry I don't know what size the brushes are, the ones folks use are specifically meant for 6.0 and up PSD's and Dmax engines.
It's pretty important that the injector cup is clean enough to eat out of before install so the orings and crush washer seal things up properly.
Thanks Nav. That’s been my feeling all along is that ine injector couldn’t cause it to run as badly as it is. It’s really not even driveable. I did do the blue spring upgrade to it a couple months ago when I bought it from my father in law. This truck has under 100k miles and has been maintained extremely well. Just seems odd an injector would be going out.
I have not been able to check the fuel pressure.
Actully when this happened today my biggest fear was towing 10k on a hot day with the atlas 40 caused my egt’s to rise too high resulting in a burned piston.
I let the truck cool off this evening snd it started a whole lot easier and the truck actually revved when i pressed on the has however, it still idled like crap.
Im just so confused with diesels. I’ve worked on my gassers for the past 30 years.
While your avoiding the box part stores also avoid bay on injectors. One other place to get the same thing and they are good >> FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts
They have the brush set and I think last time I checked they had some sort of loan deal. This is what the brush set looks like. There is an injector cup in the photo so you can get
an idea of the size.
You also are going to want a compressor or a source of compressed air to blow out the hold down clamp bolt holds. If there is oil in there when you torque the bolt down it will give a false
reading and the injector will not be happy a bit down the road. 1/4 or a 3/8 drive torque wrench is the way to go at this job. With the 1/4 drive being the best.
I would also check all the boots to be sure that you don't have one leaking air. Just ask and someone will post the how to for injector replacement.
There are some good Youtube videos on the process. Look for SrMasterTech or DieselTechRon.
They have oth passed away but the info they gave us is still very helpful.
i just did the bubble test and I’m getting lots of big bubbles, not small bubbles like seen in many videos. Definitely lots of bubbles coming up tho. So does this point even more to a bad injector?
