I have a 1999 F550 v10 auto, bought used. What letter/number on the vin denotes what tranny I have? Im thinking 4r100. I tow a pretty heavy trailer (just under 10,00lbs) and a fair load in the flatbed. My tranny is ok, but I dont exactly love the shift points, and its relatively inconsistent. According to the receipts it was a full rebuild twice, within 10k miles of each other! With about 50k miles on it since rebuild, im thinking about a shift kit to gain a bit of performance, and general consistency out of it.
There is no transmission information in the VIN. There is a data tag in the driver's door opening. Under TR there will be an E on your truck. E stands for 4R100, the only automatic available in the Superduty in 1999.
What do you mean by inconsistent shift points? The shifts happen at varying speeds, or the shift feel is inconsistent?
Thanks Mark. I feel the tranny is kind of inconsistent at its shift points under load (I feel like I regulate it by decelerating a bit so it will shift) and it seems a bit slow to upshift on the highway when on a hill. Its not a big thing, just an observation, and I was wondering if maybe an aftermarket kit may stabilize things. Much appreciated.
If you want to decode anything else here is a good reference that covers the VIN and the door tag (the info is specific for a 2003 so the options may be different for other years but the breakdown of sections is the same):
