I fill it with fluid. Put the front on jack stands and turn the wheel with it off. power steering cap pops off every time and fluid pukes everywhere. any suggestions? New pump, new gearbox, all new lines. Any help is appreciated.
My suggestion is to start the truck so that the pump is running then turn it side to side. Most PS pumps are self bleeding. Just what I would do first. BTM
If you get air trapped in the pump it can make life miserable. I always crank without starting for a few tries over 15 mins. Then start for 1 -2 seconds and shut off a few times. No turning of the wheel. After that you can start it up and turn it lock to lock. If you get a little noise at full lock shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes and crank with out starting again.
If you are blowing the cap off I would double check the level and the hose routing. Sounds like you have high pressure fluid returning directly to the tank.
let it sit overnight.
raise front of truck.. so front tires are off the ground...
start engine... slowly move steering wheel full one end of travel then slowly to the other end of travel...
do the back and forth 3 times.. turn off engine.. and check level.
if above does not work... using a hand powered vacuum pump ( mini-vac ) as air is truly Trapped.

this is actually stated for use in the service manual to be used when trying to bleed... but also as stated above.. fill the reservoir and let it sit over night... then try turning the wheel back and forth the next day with the engine off.. reason being to do it with the engine off is that if the air is still trapped in the pump you can burn it out quickly as the fluid is used to cool the pump.. after 20 or so turns let it sit for another hr before starting.. then cycle the wheel again an additional 20.. dont let it suck in any air or youll have to start the procedure all over.
