53 Ford F500 bed removal

what is this big metal thing over top of tires between the frame members?

There of two sets of two all threads with top and bottom plate that hold green wooden frame to yellow metal frame. If I remove the eight nuts from the eight of these, the whole bed should come off leaving just the yellow metal frame correct? Doesn’t look like any wires or lines are in the way. Just not sure what the metal thing above the wheels is and if that actually helps hold frame members together? I am trashing the whole stake frame. It’s not in bad shape . I want to go all wood. I have 11 metal stakes that are in real good shape. I had to grind all carriage bolts off to remove the old wood.

Looks like part of a dump bed pivot or hoist. It is not part of the trucks frame, but may be attached.
I would torch those long bolts, much less work.

I'm not sure bit was or is your truck a tilt bed or dump bed? That could be the pivot point.

Looks to me like that was a pivot point for a dump bed. If that is a Ford script bed, please remove it with care as someone will want it.

Looks like a script bed to me. Does it say Ford in script in the center of the rear cross member? The script bed is very desirable. You may want to think twice about getting rid of it.

I am having second thought about that center piece. Perhaps a base for a fifth wheel hitch. Wrong place for a tilt bed part. Better pictures would help.

I’d like to try to take it off all in one piece.

It's a shame someone put that eyebolt through the FORD letters.

Thanks for the pics. If I were you I'd fix up this bed, paint it to match the cab and put nice planks on the bed with bed strips between them. Those metal stakes are valuable hang on to them a lot of flatbeds don't have them.
