This is all I've got at the moment, so would like to get it working if I can. - getting suitable things here in the UK is quite difficult (or so I thought, but it sounds like there are a few newer options?!)

In terms of identification, here is the tag

I don't see York or Tecumseh?
Is that the tag on the compressor? Looks different in your other photo.

At the very least I would absolutely install a new receiver/dryer and suggest rebuilding the compressor (it looks like a York to me).
As far as Yorks being power hogs, I say if you have it use it. I just finished rebuilding the ac system in my '65. Did a complete rebuild of the compressor and there is no noticeable loss of power with the a/c on. Having a 390 4v and no power steering probably does help though, so not sure what you're running.

edit: DOH! looks like you've got a 390 as well. Seems like a no brainer to me. Rebuild what you've got and go for it.
