Explorer 4wd problem
I'm new to this forum and hope you can help me. I have a '97 Explorer XLT 4WD with SOHC engine. It has 90,000 miles on it. It just started displaying a blinking 4WD high and 4WD low warning light. It will display the lights 6 times every 2 minutes.
The next day after first receiving those lights - I ran into a problem where the front left wheel appears to be sticking while driving forward. At times it completely binds when taking a sharpe left turn, but doesn't show the same problem on a right turn (yet).
To make matters worse the first time it appeared to bind was as I was driving out of the dealers lot after I had it appraised since I am thinking about buying a new vehicle. How's that for timing? I am looking for some potential inexpensive fixes since I don't want to put a lot of money into a car I'd be trading in.
Thanks!
1. Check fuse 26, make sure it's not blown.
2. Disconnect the battery for five minutes to reset your computer.
3. Start your truck, put it in neutral and with your foot on the brake cycle your switch from 4hi then 4lo then back to auto, this will sometimes clear it.
4. Pull and clean your speed sensors.
If these don't work you could be looking at having to replace the speed sensors, cleaning or changing the t-case shift motor or replacing the GEM.
For others, what I did is check the fuse - it was ok. I disconnected the battery and that did clear the code, but the problem remained. I then cycled the switch through 4hi to 4lo and back. That seems to have resolved the problem at least for now.
Thanks again!
