97 Explorer problem

Driving a borrowed 97 explorer at the moment. Vehicle has full time 4 wheel drive. Switch on dashboard has 3 positions, auto, 4wd and 4wd low. It acts like it can't make up it's mind whether to be in auto or 4wd when the switch is in the auto position. The dash appears to be flashing a code, both 4wd and 4wd low lights flash six times every couple of miles of driving. Does enybody have any insight as to what's going on?

Gonna have to get it read. Don't think anyone other than the dealer or someone who has the specific ford software can read it.
