Key switch?
I have an 88 or 89 F250 Diesel. Question I have is when I got into the truck yesterday, I turned the key but it did not have any stop points. By stop points I mean there seemes to be full travel in the switch. I can turn the key to the start position and basically it stays there. and the motor didnt even turn over. I followed the steel rod down the colum and found a module, is this module needing replacement or is there somthing buried in the colum closer to the key switch that needs replacement? The part number of the module is: (F2TA11572EA) This module does seem to have some type of spring mechanism in it but when i slide the thing inside, it doesnt even touch the spring.
If it is a problem with the module could sombody plaese let me know wht it is called so I can buy a new one?
Any help is greatly appreaciated.
Thanks
The Key cylinder is that where you stick your key in to start the truck. To remove that thing stick the key into the cylinder, turn the key in direction to start and while doing this push a little phillips screwdriver into the small hole in the steering colum under the cylinder. Is the key in the right position you will be able to pull out the key with the whole cylinder. Now you can check the key cylinder itself and you can check your switch. To do this you can use a middle sized scewdriver, stick it into the switch (where normaly your key cylinder is) and turn the schrewdriver.
Are you still missing the "Stops" the next would be to change the switch.....
Maybe it is only the key cylinder, but, as I said, I'm not sure....

Should the new switch cylender be "spring loaded"? What I mean by that is will the cylinder sping out of the start position??
or does the switch itself push the cylinder from the "start" to "run" position?
Is there a digram somewhere that shows me how to remove the ignition switch itself, if in fact the switch is what is bad?
Thanks again for you time helping me

And eventually come home with a new used column...
It seems to me the "stops" should be built into the switch itself. The purpose of the lock cylinder is to prevent anything turning - it's a dedicated unit. The switch having set contacts where things happen should be the determining item as to detents which ought to be spring loaded - otherwise you would have to align the key cylinder with the switch seperately.
That would be a pain in the butt, and I'm betting that FORD would not do it that way!

I bought a new switch. that was the problem. Now I have another problem.
I heard you said somthing about aligning the key lock with the switch. How do i do that. The reason I say that is what I have to do is because when I installed the new switch (colum one) i can feel the detents. but they come nowhere to matching what the detents should be.
Is there a basic rule of thumb I should follow when trying to do this?
I getting really frustrated. But I refuse to go to a dealer, I'd rather learn this stuff myself and lose some hair over stress then take it in.
Again, any help is greatly appreaciated.

COLOR=skyblue] the camera cant get the focus on the horror here. but you can see how messed up the switch now is though. I priced some options today. 1 get a non tilt yard part for $150.00 2 get a reman tilt for bout $400.00 hmmmmoption 3 is my own idea to keep at this one and replace the switch as well as make repairs to the loose tilt end parts. Now ,one of you indicated that the tilt end cant be refurbished by oneself. I'm thinking, Is the old colunm a core then ,cause the guy didnt mention it for the reman unit ? I see the other switch located lower on the coplumn that this guy has trouble with. I'd like to ask, if the switch is all out on yours now, can you move the linkage by hand ? whats detents, and are they at the key switch or on the other lower switch. Will the lower switch get replaced too ?
rebel.. I see your still at it. Try taking a hammer and punch to that pin on the bottom. Hopefully there is still something to grab and pull on. Pull and punch at the same time.

i may have fixed the wiggle by properly reinstalling the three fastners either more properly fitting them inplace or haveing torqued them REAL tight this time. The blinker doesnt hold right turns and they failed it for that too. any replacement parts at ADVANCE AUTO for this ? PEP BOYS ? do you see what i am talking about there in the pic ?
If you drop that steering column, you may break the little cable that runs the "PNDLR" indicator. Be careful
