Im still stuck with the issue of "why is it there".
For oow, I'm going to run the wires to my dash and put a switch there so i van cut it ofg on the highway.
In the mean time, try to figure out what is going on.
I know this is a little old but this is the EXACT issue my son is having with his 1988 Bronco. He recently rebuilt the transmission got it installed. Was able to drive it around the neighborhood and test drive on the highway a few times. Said it was vibrating quite a bit but I really think that was tires he had 3 of the original previous owner tires probably about 10 years old and then one oversized tire on the passenger side front. We finally found some used tires all the same size and after sitting about two months we get the EXACT behavior as you. Reverse he can drive around the yard all day puts it in drive and it will die after about 10-15 seconds or if you give it gas it dies immediately. I am going to test the put it in 1st this weekend but he said he tried that and it works. So it sounds like the exact thing but there are no solenoids in the AOD and I don't understand what that switch you found does??

you should find the other end of that hose inside the wiring loom next to the fender / firewall farther to the left in the pic. that's the vacuum hose for the recirc door.
