I have a set of old ('81) Yokohamas on my '74 F-100. They still hold air pressure but I would not trust them long enough to reach the end of the driveway.
Be sure to check the date codes, they will try to sell you two year old tires.

If not, send them back or order more until we get it right.
I'm not quite as stringent as dn29626 but I do have requirements too. My tires are usually not in stock and have to be shipped from somewhere else. The only rule I use is the 6 month old rule. I burn through a set of tires in 2-3 years so age isn't too much of a concern for me but I'm not interested in buying tires that have been sitting for a long time on a rack or in a pile.
I've not had an issue and most of the time they are within a month from newest to oldest DOT code.
