Is there any way to tell when a tire was manufactured...i.e. serial number on tire. The reason I ask is because I have a spare on my truck(underneath) and wondered since it is out of the sun and never used can I throw it on the rim and replace it with one of my worn tires. Or should I be worried that it is old and compromised???
However, they don't have to be in direct sun light to rot. Temperatures and humidity can also help age break down rubber. I would advise pulling the tire down and inspecting it before making a decision on it. If it's cracking, I wouldn't use for anything but a spare.
