hey guys i have a 88 f 150 with an aod and a carberated 302. it has the correct linkage for the carberated style for the tv cable. it shifts fine from 1-2 2-3 and 3-4 ( a little long ) but when i come to a red light or what ever.. i have to put the trans in 1 st manualy. if not it will start in second, unless i punch it then it will kick to first... any ideas?
What do you mean by "a little long"? Do you have to rev it up excessively to get it to upshift? If so the TV cable preload is slightly high and that will also cause delayed downshifts.
If I adjust the cable for the stock setting with barely any reliad on the cable. It shifts good but won’t start out in 1st wen I come to a stop. It starts off in second unless I mash it. If I adjust the cable so there’s preload (tighten it up ). It starts out in first but holds the gear to 3200 on light cruise.... I’m thinking something’s wrong.
Make smaller adjustments, the second setting you described above where it holds the shifts a little too long is very close to where you need to be, just slightly less preload.
Ok. I’m just used to the c6 because under light cruise they shift quick but the Aod is wierd I guess it has to wind out a little more. Makes sence because the truck is on 35s with 355s so it has allot of gear First to second is like 25? 20.
The AOD should shift like any other trans more or less, the TV cable setting is critical and tiny changes make a noticable difference so you're only a couple tweaks away I would think. Have you regeared the speedo drive to correct for the tires? It won't affect the trans shifting but your speedo is way off, 50mph indicated is actually 60mph ground speed. That truck could also use a lot more axle gearing, overdrive is pretty much useless as it sits right now.
I still use overdrive 55 and above. It doesn’t really come out unless I hit a big hill but yes I’d like to regear to 410s. So I can pull better. What’s your opinion towing with this set up lol
Far from ideal and only suitable for light loads, and you need to keep it out of OD completely for the sake of your transmission. 3.73 gear is the ideal for a 5.0 truck with stock sized tires, that final drive ratio will produce the best combination of fuel milage vs performance/towing abiliity. With 35" tires to get the same final drive ratio you need 4.56 gears, 4.30 gears would put you back to the same performace your truck had with stock sized tires, 4.10s would be the same as a stock truck with 3.31 gears.
