hi guys, i have an 88 bronco that i just recently turned into a dedicated mud truck. right now im still using the stock aod tranny until i can get a good c6 for it. my aod is the cable operated one found on these early fuel injected trucks.i have a carbureated 351W in it now with around 450 HP.i have connnected the cable to the linkage on the side of the carb(750 dual line holley).i kinda rigged a bracket to hold the cable from the one originally found on the plenum.
my problem is that if your driving it easy it will shift, not exactly like its supposed to which i believe is because the cable doesn't move exactly with the throttle.if you really get in it, especially in 4lo, it will just tach out and not shift.you have to let off of it and feather it a little to get it to shift.this doesn't work when your mud racing.anyone have any suggestions on how to get this thing to shift so i can race it this weekend or is thhis engine just too much for this stock aod?any help is appreciated
The preload on the cable determines the line pressure in the trans, too much preload and it holds the shift to higher rpms, not enough preload and the tranny slips. How have you got the cable adjusted now?
i have the stock bracket from the 5.0 plenum cut and bolted to the intake in front of the carb linkage.it is set with no slack at idle which is how i assumed it should be but i may be wrong.i will get a picture cause it will prolly make more since when you see it.
If that a stock AOD behind 450 HP, it won't be long before you are looking for that C6. I went through 3 "performance built" AODs behind a mild 351. I now have a Lentech AOD behind my 351/408 stroker.
I used a Lokar cable kit on my Edlebrock carb. The cable should be at it's maximum range at full throttle.
