I'm considering installing an AOD tranny behind my 308 sbf. I have an older Ford AOD I purchased a few years ago. I asked a shop about rebuilding the tranny, and he told me not to invest in the older Ford AOD w/ kick down. Should I hold off and find an AOD with electronics instead of using the older version Ford AOD with kick down cable?
The AOD is a fine transmission, nothing wrong with it. It's characteristics take a bit of getting used to, but.... I run a STOCK built AOD behind my 351 and it sees constant "abuse". It's never skipped a beat.
The later model AOD-E isn't anything other than an electric controlled model. Not any better or worse. Just different.
BETTER would be the even later model 4R70W transmission.
Depends on what you're trying to do. Just cruise down the highway? AOD is great.
Maximum All out performance? 4R70W with controller and custom tuning.
