Hi, my 99 Expedition has been sitting for about two years and a half. I had told my grandson he could have it because I wasn't using it. I think he never even started it after I took it to him. And he never transferred the title. He said it was too old and wasn't interested. So I was going to get it running and give it to somebody who needs it. I charged the battery. I tried to start it and it does not turn over. Has it been long enough for the engine to seize? Could something like the alternator or power steering be locked up from rust and keep the engine from turning over? Or the belt tensioner?
It makes a loud noise like a clunk. Louder than a solenoid noise. I was thinking maybe a starter or something frozen? I am doing it myself so I can't try to turn it on and look at the engine at the same time.
Could be seized engine if water or condensation made its way into the engine. If you suspect the from belt drive, you can just remove the belt and see if it makes a difference, though I doubt it. Try to rotate the engine with a 1/2" breaker bar as suggested, then you'll probably know what is going on.
I was given a 99 with the same iaaue. It sat for 3 years. I had clicking from the solenoid on the firewall as well. Mine ended up being the crank sensor wires. Chipmunks chewed them. I put a jumper wire in, twisted em together and it started right up. Good luck
