whining noise
I have a 98 f-150 4.6 that has a loud whining noise while driving or sitting and revving up the engine. Also on cold starts the starter drags. Could the starter cause this whining noise?Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Fords are notorius for whining power steering pumps. Mine was loud right from the factory. (2002). They installed a new cap assembly that was supposed to prevent foaming, but that did not help. After much complaining, by yours truly, they replaced the pump, under warrenty, and the whine went away.
Try holding a steady rpm while sitting still, and then turn the wheel from side to side. If the whine changes when you turn the wheel, its probably the ps pump.Good luck!

I bought a used alternator from a junkyard they said it only had 40,000 on it.The loud whining noise is still there. I checked the power steering pump and the noise was still there when i moved steering wheel side to side.I noticed when i was removing the serpentine belt if i wanted to i could have taken it off with my hands.Anymore help would be appreciated.Thanks

I had a whinning/howling noise on mine when it was around 2k rpms I think. I ended up replacing the pcv valve and that quieted some. Next I found the air intake hose had slipped of of the intake manifold just a little bit. I put the hose back on and made sure to get the clamp tight. Problem solved.
