If I let my Excursion sit for 24 or 48 hours between driving it, it will make a very loud THUMP noise up in the engine compartment when I do start the engine.
It's so loud it would almost scare the average person if they weren't expecting it.
Any ideas? A/C compressor or something else on the belt not engaging or turning freely, and having to be jerked to a start is my first guess?
The best way I can think of to describe it is........ somebody is standing beside the right front tire and hits it as hard as they can with an aluminum baseball bat, at the same exact time you turn the key and the engine statrts turning over.
Check your starter to be sure the bolts are not loose. Do this soon. If they are loose you could break the bellhousing and this would be a big buck repair. I would not crank it again until checking the starter bolts. They have been known to come loose and break off a chunk of housing requiring pulling the engine to repair. Good luck. Jim

Interesting. How often has this been known to happen?
Ohh, come to think of it, let me add....... the first few times I ever noticed this THUMP was right after starting the engine and while idling, turning the A/C on.
Now, it's doing it even though the A/C isn't on or turned on.
And it only does it after the Excursion has been sitting 24 to 48 hours without starting it. It won't make the noise as long as the Excursion IS started every day.

best bet that it is the blend door under the dash. when you start the engine, it builds vacuum and closes the door....THUMP.....mine does this every once in a while too. try doing this with the a/c on the max a/c position one day, vent one day, and off the next day. see if it changes. oh, select the position before you shut the truck off the night before. hope this helps..

I am thinking along the same lines you are. Was/is it a very loud THUMP?
vtt, the starter bolts are tight, just checked that. But thanks!
i was looking at a used 4x4 a couple of years ago..i heard the same loud thump..bang..just like that when it was started.....you should have seen how fast i ran away... i didnt know what it was and i did not want to.
Hello, Im new to the forum so please bare with me, I had the same prob. when the truck was new took it to the dealer several times. After discussing it with the teck after the third time it was explained to me, don't start your truck the old way. Do not step on the pedal while starting, this creates a lean misfire condition. just turn the key and let the computer do its job. Since then I have not had the thump or backfire.
