Trailer Disconnected/Connected Message

Hi FTE,

i recently just discovered this awesome forum where other 17+ super duty members can help one another. i've seen some cool trucks here and hopefully i can find an answer to my problem.

I have a new 2017 f350 and when I hook up my truck to my dump trailer, it indicates there is a trailer connection on the screen and I can adjust the trailer brake controller. On my boat trailer it says trailer disconnected and I can’t adjust my controller. Even though it says trailer disconnected, I still get all working lights and running lights, but have zero control with my trailer brake controller. i double checked my boat trailer wiring to my 7-pin connector and everything is connected accordingly. im not sure why my dump trailer it says connected, but on my boat it says disconnected?

What brake system do you have on your boat trailer?
electronic brakes send signal, hydraulic different story. Make sure you have the trailer configured correctly in the trucks system

Have you made sure the trailer plug is clean and not corroded?

I had that issue once on our toy hauler before I bought a 7 way cap to cover when stored.

Thanks for the response, i should've clarified what kind of brakes are on the boat trailer.
The boat trailer has a hydraulic surge brake actuator system. i wired the blue wire in the center (backup lights) like my trailer guy told me too. below is how i have it wired exactly. My Auxiliary (RED) and Electric Brakes (BLK/BLUE) are empty since those dont apply. my boat trailer has a total of 8 wires going into the 7-pin connector.

[Ground]- white, yellow white, green white
[Aux] -
[Left Turn/Stop] - yellow
[Electric brakes]-
[Running Lights]- green brown, yellow brown
[Right Turn/Stop] - green
[Back Up Lights] - blue

If your boat trailer has surge brakes they are not connected to the truck’s controller. They work when the momentum of the trailer pushes on the mechanism as the truck brakes slow the truck down. There is no electricity in the process.

Is the electric brakes pin (trailer side) empty in your setup?
That needs to be live for the truck to register the trailer.

The wire to the BU lights is to activate the solinoid to lock out the trailer brakes when backing up

Thanks FaC!
i think you pretty much found the answer to my problem and it makes sense too. These new trucks with the trailer sensor just threw me off, but glad to know that surge brakes wont send the trailer signal. what a bummer.

@Singleton3rd, since my trailer brakes are surge actuators, my blue wire should be in the center so it wont lock when i reverse like @jnphobe said. i did try connecting the blue wire to the "electric brakes" pin and it still did not send a connection signal to the truck. i think what @FaC said could possibly be the reason.
